SSP / ESA was created by cheekypink
My friend had a stroke in January she only receives ssp. She will be unable to return to her job and wonder if she should hand in her notice and go to the social security office for ESA or will the social continue to pay her ssp? Can anyone advise me of linking ssp up to 28 weeks as she was absent from work previously from 12 December 2016 until 2 May 2017 then from now 16 January 2018. Is there too much of a break between May and January for SSP to link 28 weeks SSP?

She should not resign without getting face to face advice first.

ESA cannot be claimed if the claimant is entitled to SSP.

Linked periods of sickness
If you have regular periods of sickness, they may count as ‘linked’. To be linked, the periods must:

- last 4 or more days each
- be 8 weeks or less apart

You’re no longer eligible for SSP if you have a continuous series of linked periods that lasts more than 3 years.

from www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay/eligibility

They can make an ESA claim in anticipation of their SSP ending so that there is no break in payments, but the claim will require their employer to issue an SSP1 form to confirm there SSP has been exhausted.
