Carers allowance and ESA (IR) was created by Chrissiefeeny
HI Gordon.
Quick question, having read a post on here a couple of weeks ago.
If my husband is on pension and he looks after my disabled son,who is on ESA (IR),can he claim carers allowance?
I saw you told another subscriber that her husband could continue to claim carers, even though he is on pension, due to the fact she is on ESA (IR).
I haven't heard of this before?...
All it says in GOV site, is when you reach retitement age, you have an entitlement to carers but won't be paid the allowance.

Their situation was very different.

Your son is not part of your household so their ESA claim is not relevant.

To be able to claim CA your son must be receiving DLA MRC or HRC or PIP Daily Living (there are other qualifying benefits), if he is only receiving ESA then your husband cannot claim the CA.

If your husband can claim Carers Allowance then he should consider doing so but it won't normally be paid, CA and the State Pension are classed as overlapping benefits so only the one that pays the most, usually the Pension, will actually be paid.

However, if your husband is eligible for Pension Credit then a Carers Premium can be paid of around £35/week. He will need to be quick to claim the PC as the rules for claiming it will be changing in early May. Put your information into one of the online benefit calculators to check your eligibility.
