Hi all. I am appointee for my son who has autism and mental health problems. I sent the pip form in 3 weeks ago and now have received a home assessment appointment for this Friday. I didn't ask for a home asmnt so am a bit surprised. Also its short notice got letter today. Anyone else in the same boat or ideas why home asmnt. For ESA we attended a centre. Thanks

Hi Sandra

I know someone else with a son with both autism and mental health problems and they were given a home assessment without requesting one. When she queried it, the assessor told her they thought having read through the notes that her son would be more comfortable in his own home (which in their case was true). There's nothing suspicious in this - they are just trying to do the right thing. Their f2f too was also at short notice and I think this is because they have very few home visits available.

Hi, Sandra,

I'm the member that BIS was referring to when she spoke about my son's home assessment.

Yes, when the provider rang and asked if he needed a home assessment, I said he didn't really, as he was all right when he was with me. But he said that as my son had significant anxiety and mental health problems, he thought it would be easier for him to have a home assessment, so I agreed.

I did say to my son beforehand that she was coming and that she would want to speak to him, but I didn't make him dress up smart or anything like that.

During the assessment I took a lot of notes, especially when I could tell that he was giving the answer he thought she wanted to hear. I did intervene once or twice to explain to him what she'd meant when I could tell he hadn't understood the question in the right context. And I made sure to tell her that he was at his best in his home environment, and she could see I'd made a note that I'd told her that, too.

But actually, I was quite impressed with her. I'd worked out that I thought he'd get the standard rate daily living and mobility, but I was surprised when she recommended (and he was awarded) the enhanced daily living, but nothing for mobility.

After no luck with the MR, I appealed for the mobility. (It was a 59 week wait), but he got the standard mobility as well, awarded on the papers, I think. I was only in there ten minutes and they didn't ask to speak to him when I said he wanted to stay in the waiting room.
From the questions I thought they were trying to see if he could qualify for the enhanced mobility, too. But I knew he didn't.
And they gave him an indefinite award, instead of the two years, as well.

The guides on this site are unbelievably helpful. Be familiar with them and make sure you know what they want to find out is if his difficulties fit the descriptors. Those are the only grounds on which they can award points.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
Becca
