Severe Disability Premium was created by Battlezone
Does anyone know about Severe Disability Premium? My son is in receipt of PIP Enhanced Care Component from July 2018. From July 2018 to May 2019 he lived with his brother. In May 2019 he moved to his own Council accommodation.

My son received a letter from the Council last Friday. It says his housing benefit covers all his rent which is £119.12 per week. His total income is £239.94 with ”Income Used in Calculation” shown as £127.29.

But I don't understand about this Severe Disability Premium. The letter says:
Severe Disability Premium single £65.85
Enhanced disability – single £16.80
Single Claimant under 25 years old £57.90
Disability premium single £34.35
TOTAL APPLICABLE AMOUNT £174.90

Is this money paid to him weekly – or not at all? If he is paid, should it be backdated to when he moved into his own accommodation last May 2019? Or does he receive the difference between his housing benefit rate - £119.12 - and the Total Applicable Amount. To be honest the total is £174.90 per week which seems a huge amount of money. The letter came from his Council.

I have tried online calculators but they don’t even mention SDP and also they say my son should be paying about £10 a week in rent.

Hi Battlezone

The amounts you list are all paid weekly and they are the figures listed on the government website

www.gov.uk/disability-premiums-income-support/what-youll-get

From what you have said (and I can't see the letter) - he is going to receive £174 per week - his rent is covered by housing benefit.

In terms of whether his Severe Disability Premium should be backdated to the point at which he started living alone, you would need to contact the DWP and ask.

Hi Battlezone

When you contact DWP about your son's SDP you need to ask for an 'Any time review' if you ask for a backdate then they may only go back one month. As BIS stated below you need the review to start from when your son lived on his own, I take it no one is receiving CA for him?

He does not receive CA. The difficulty is that, as I have said on another thread, my son's PIP was stopped by the DWP incorrectly in March 2019. They restarted his payment four weeks ago. The DWP said it was their error and his payments should never have been stopped. But because he is receiving Housing Benefit, the SDP is being "paid” by his Council. But no where in the letter does it say about how he gets this money. It just says Total Applicable Amount.

The Council have refunded him all the rent payments he had made since May 2019. But as it was the DWP error his money was stopped, surely I should be dealing with the Council. I'm sorry I still don't understand who I should speak to - Council or DWP.

Hi Battlezone

The SDP is paid for by the DWP. It is them you need to speak to.

Update. I telephoned the DWP this morning and they informed me that it is nothing to do with them. It should be the Council I speak to. The DWP said as my son is in receipt of housing benefit, the severe disability premium is off set against his rent payment. Even though his rent is less than the Severe Disability payments, he will not be entitled to the difference. I wrote to the Council yesterday but have not had a reply. The DWP also told me that my son should never have registered for Universal Credits as he is in ”receipt” of SDP. They asked me who told him to apply and my response was the Council. The DWP said to get in contact with Universal Credits and cancel his application through the journal. But even though he has never received any payments from universal credit, he has been with them since he moved into his council accommodation, May 2019.
