Proof of identity aside from a passport

Hello Gordon, BIS and Gary,

I am anticipating my DLA to PIP letter at some point in the near future (of course I don't know exactly when).

Based on the above, I decided that I'd better have my passport ready for identity purposes but cannot find it! I will have a thorough look during the next few days but, if unsuccessful, I will phone the passport office to report it and see about getting a replacement.

I am worried about the cost to me and may have to delay getting a replacement. Therefore, I checked the gov.identity page to see what else I could use if I cannot afford a replacement passport for a few months.

I only have a 2013 copy of my birth certificate and do not have a driving licence. However, the website states that I can use an original benefits agency letter for proof of who I am, as long as I don't use the same letter for proof of address. I could use council tax letter for the latter.

My question is does my 2019 entitlement to ESA letter constitute as "an original letter from the benefits agency"?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question; I'm worried that I will get my invitation to transfer to PIP before I can afford to sort out a replacement passport. Also, my support officer is on leave until 24th October and I don't know who else to ask for help (one of my conditions is severe anxiety).

Thank you for all that you do; I am so very grateful for this forum.

Best,

Susie

Hi Susie

If you do not have either a passport or driver's licence, you should bring any other document that you may have, particularly one that has your photograph on it such as a bus pass. The following documents may also be acceptable: credit card, debit card, medical card, age ID card, work ID card, club membership card, recent benefit letter, council tax letter, tenancy agreement. If you do not have a prime document (passport or driver's licence) then you need to take 2/3 additional forms to prove id.

To answer your question, yes your 2019 entitlement to ESA letter constitute as "an original letter from the benefits agency.

Thank you Gary,

I do have a freedom pass with a photo as well as 4 or 5 of the other proofs of address needed.

Apologies for being do panicky but is my lack of government-approved photo identity likely to delay my claim?

Sorry to be a pain!

Thank you for your time,

Susie

Hi Susie

Your freedom pass with your photo should be good enough, I would always take a couple of other documents as back up.

I can't see it delaying your claim, you will be informed if they need further id at the time, so if you are worrying about it, take what you have as long as they are recent, you can always contact DWP to send you conformation as to what benefits you are receiving.

DWP normally write to claimants Feb/March time informing them if they have an increase in their benefits, sometimes you need something more recent, such as applying for Court fee remissions, so contact DWP and ask.
