Mum lives with me and pays rent was created by Rosserd
Hi my mum lives with me and pays £125 a week rent it barely covers the things she needs.

I claim ESA and PIP, do I have to declare the rent she pays me? I’m sure I told ESA and PIP she lived with us when I first claimed. She originally came to help look after me but she now has dementia and we don’t claim any benefits for her. She will need to go into a care home soon because I can’t care for her because I’m not well enough.

Your PIP is not affected by any money that you are paid.

If your ESA is only Contribution Based then it is also not affected.

If you are receiving any Income Related ESA, either in part or in whole, then I don't think it will be affected but I can't find anything that specifically covers this situation. I think you need to declare the money, it will help if you can specifically identify the costs that it covers, for example; rent and food. The danger of not doing so is that it is flagged as a regular payment and treated as income.

Thank you Gordon I will add it onto the bottom of the form just in case. I’m 99% sure I told them she lived with me to help out but I wouldn’t have mentioned her paying any rent. She has three bottles of San Miguel a night so that’s £35 a week gone and don’t get me started on the bars of chocolate at a pound a time she gets through!! Lol

My ESA is contribution based and I’m in the support group.

Hi Daniel

You have to be careful with your terminology, when you say rent, do you mean board and lodgings?

As Gordon has stated below 'If your ESA is only Contribution Based then it is also not affected'.
