I asked my MSP (scotland) for help re length of award and was reassured by him (several times!) that the award would not go down and he got the award extended by 1 year. So from my experience I would use your MP.

I am happy for you, I also found guides great and forum, I too am in Scotland and my MSP got my award extended by 1 year without need for MR or appeal, he also reassured me that the award would not go down as the DWP frighten us with.
