My landlord put rent up,I informed uc and although they adjusted the new rent by £49 , they also reduced my transional payment £49. So I have to pay more rent out of same money I got before. Can anyone explain that. Thanks

Hi Juney

This is exactly what was planned when the previous Tory governments developed Universal Credit. It is called Transitional Protection erosion and will affect everyone sooner or later.

i had the same issie - housing benefit increase did not affect income support or jobseekrs, so it seems extrememly unfair that the housing elemet is treated in this way - prety much my entire TP for SDP on legacy benefits was eroded by increase in housing costs. it would seem only fair that only yearly increses in the personal allowance should erode you TP - and it came as a shock to me aswell. im around £400 worse off per month since moving to UC 4 years ago - to add insult to injuryr the only resason i moved to UC was because my sons initial transfer for dla to pip was refused which meant i was no longer entitled to income support- a decision that was later over turned on appeal - but by then it was too late as once youre off legacy benefits you cant go back.
once his award was reinstated, they initially took my entire tp away claiming my UC award had increased - which it hadnt it was just put back to what it should have always been as his pip award date predated my UC claim - took 4 months of being told there was not mistake before it was rectified. you couldnt make it up!

Hi Astee

The reductions are intentional and built into the system. UC was designed 15 years ago during Tory Austerity and the stigmatisation of Benefit claimants in the Media ( programs such as Benefit Street ).
