FAO David please.
I transferred last year from ESA to UC, I currently get UC and ESA

I had an overpayment from UC that was done by mistake due to them not taking off the correct amount of ESA. They arranged a debt payment and that was being paid each time I was paid UC, but today I received a journal message saying

"Apologies for the delay to respond to your journal messages.

Thank you for your message.
The £63.73 deduction shown on your statement for the assessment period 21 April to 20 May 2026 is for the recovery of other DWP benefit debts from some time ago."

I'm not very well and have complex needs and its on my file so they do know this, so my mum deals with a lot of this, she was not aware of myself having any other debts with the DWP, I haven't received any letters informing me about any other debts. My mum spoke to debt management and they said that they couldn't see any other debts apart from the overpayment one that was being paid back each payment I received, so we spoke to UC and they passed a message on to a case manager, the same lady who sent the message above, she replied with

"We called you today regarding your query, which we have previously responded to. However, we were unable to reach you.
As explained in the journal message dated 15/07/2026, we provided details of the reason for the overpayment. You also raised a query regarding other DWP debt recoveries. We do not hold details of other DWP debts on your Universal Credit claim, so you will need to contact Debt Management directly regarding this matter.
We have also explained that it may take some time for all DWP systems to update with details of the current overpayment.
If you disagree with the overpayment decision, you have the option to request a Mandatory Reconsideration. When making your request, you will need to explain why you believe the overpayment decision is incorrect and should be reviewed.
Please note that the journal is not an instant messaging service, and we may not always be able to respond immediately.
Kind regards"

she seems certain that there is another debt, but won't tell me what the debt is for, the total she is talking about is the total that the debt management team set up to pay the over payment. As you can see she is talking about a mandatory reconsideration, I'm really upset as to what is happening, would it be possible for you to tell me the DWP area manager of my area so I can contact them directly as i have seen you have kindly done this for members in the past.

My area is Basildon, Essex.

Thank you for your help.

Hi NeedingHelp 2025

You may have seen on the Forum members finding new information about their Benefits through creating a Gov.uk One Login account. It is now possible to do the same regarding debts using One Login as per DWP guidance:-
Repay and manage benefit money you owe
You can use this service to: Check how much you owe
find out why you need to repay money
view your payment history
pay back what you owe in full or make a one-off payment
get help and support about the money you owe.
www.gov.uk/repay-manage-benefit-owed

Otherwise you could get a copy of all the documents the DWP hold on you by demanding a SAR ( subject access request ) under the GDPR law.

Here are the details of the DWP area manager for Hertfordshire and Essex - Matthew Davis and email - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

When you email your complaint remember to detail all the stress and upset this issue has caused you as well as the mistakes etc of the DWP staff.

Let us know how you get on.
