The DWP has confirmed in its latest personal independence payment (PIP) statistical release that many planned award reviews are on hold, but that claimants will continue to receive their current level of benefit until a review takes place.

In the DWP’s latest PIP Official Statistics to January 2022, published yesterday, the DWP admitted that planned reviews of PIP awards that were given for a fixed period are not all taking place because staff are working on “other parts of the process” instead.

“Planned award reviews are currently on hold in some cases which frees up resource to process registrations in other parts of the process but delays clearances for the award reviews themselves.”

In fact, the number of new claims is up 20% compared to November to January of last year.  So, a deluge of new claims is the “other part of the process” that staff are working on instead.  The bottleneck appears to be primarily in getting claimants assessed by Capita and Atos (IAS).

However, in the same document, the DWP do confirm that claimants who are waiting for their award to be reviewed will continue to receive PIP at the same rate.

“Any PIP claim where an award review is waiting to be processed continues to receive their pre-review level of benefit. Customers whose needs have changed and who are awaiting a review may instead register a change of circumstance.”

The confirmation that awards will continue in payment will come as a great relief to many thousands of claimants who have been left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty by a lack of news from the DWP about their award review.

PIP ward reviews backlog set to last

There are now over a third of a million (340,000) new claims ‘in progress’, meaning that they have yet to be completed and are probably mostly waiting for an assessment.

Waiting times for decisions on new claims have gone up from 19 weeks a year ago, to 22 weeks now.  Of this, most of the wait is for an assessment, up from 15 weeks a year ago to 17 weeks now.

Given the size of this backlog and the effect of the pandemic on people’s physical and mental health, which means new claim numbers are likely to remain very high, there seems little chance of Capita and Atos getting on top of things any time soon.

So, claimants awaiting a planned PIP review may be waiting a long time yet.

You can read the full PIP statistics to January 2022 here.

This just doesn't take into account how many things are linked to PIP status, and unless you have a letter saying you are currently covered by an active decision, you lose these items. eg a lot of councils wont renew Blue Badges without PIP decision letter. Any career tickets for events, Disability eligibility for reduced or free tolls (inc Congestion charge), Rail cards etc. So this delay leaves people without these options, so like blue badge are essential to facilitate being able to use the wider spaces and therefore can housebound people.

L had DLA life after 2 serious injuries received on duty in 1992/1999 PIP came along and I was put on 2 yr then reviewed then 3yrs and another 2 yr review my injuries are spinal as well as other issues that will not heal.  My current PIP runs out in 4 months time and i have a motability vehicle that is now in its extended period. My review form was received by DWP in July 22.

Not sure what is going to happen. Why they do not give those with obvious long term injuries/illnesses a greater length on their awards. We all know Iain Duncan Smith has a lot to answer for in this matter. These injuries cost me my career that I loved and now I am 45 tablets a day and have trouble walking and doing the things I loved. I suppose another letter to my MP now.

    Hi.

Pip review from received and sent back Dec-21. Pip due to end 7th July 2022. No communication till today stating that they would be progressing my review as soon as possible. My pip will be continued to be paid. The anxiety of even hearing from them makes my stomach knot. I’ve been through 3 tribunals. Anyone have any idea if this is just a generic text or will my review be done soon? As from what I’m reading seems a very long wait which can’t say I’m sad about.

Hi, have just come up on this forum, what's the longest people have had to wait for a review.?? A family member sent her paperwork for PIP review back in July 2021, I know, as I posted it ! Text message in September 2021 acknowledges receipt of paperwork, and still waiting for decision, her health has deteriorated, so there are changes. They are still paying her the lowest level.

Sent my review paperwork back to them in Feb 2022 as requested and heard nothing! Phoned 30/4/22 and they said they had it. Fixed term court awarded award due to expire 9th Sept 2022. Fast forward to 30th August 2022 and I phoned again.....had still heard nothing - no text, no letter, no email ZIPPO! Told extended til December 2022 as have backlog "caused by people like you keep ringing up"!!!! I pointed out that if I had heard a Dicky Bird from them since February 2022 then maybe I ( and all the other annoying people "ringing up") would not have needed to bother them! Still heard not a single communication from them since February 2022 ( except the rudeness I had on the phone calls I was forced to make by their inability to communicate anything at all)

@Nick Its not right the way the majority of them talk to you, however i rang a week or 2 ago and the person i spoke to was very pleasent. They have a backlog of new claims totaling 321000!! So i think their prioriting them. Its gone up drastically since covid struck. As long as their still paying you id try not to worry too much about it. Best of luck

Returned review form in May, received letter today. I've had a paper based assessment and my PIP has remained the same. I was very firm in my review form that my condition has not changed. Good luck to everyone on here

@Lancs lurcher I did the same but unfortunately have not had the same, I seem to be in the same boat as everyone else. Did you give access to your doctors? Maybe I made the mistake of granting them access to mine, ibhad hoped it would speed things up but my doctors do have 1* reviews for being the worst in London so maybe I made a huge mistake. The stress is unbearable

    Hi all

I had my review letter last week the stress of these letters make me ill. I was on a lifetime award when it was dla then a 4 year award when on pip now a review. I have cystic fibrosis I will never get better diabetes and kidney failure I am unable to have a transplant so no chance of my circumstances ever gettting better just worse. Surly if you have a condition that will never get better they should never be assessing fair enough if you have a illness that can improve I would give up any of these benifits to be able to work and feel well. I can not remember the last time I woke with no pain. Your all probably in the same boat that these reviews put so much stress on us.

@Stuart I find it strange how DWP/private contractors come up the variations on people with major disabilities/conditions, usually from birth. As others have said, these are conditions that will never go away & often get worse over time/with age. My 39 year old son has cerebral palsy from birth, diagnosed age 2, I had to push for a medical diagnosis as his form of it wasn’t as severe as other peoples. I had to get DLA renewed every 2 years for him, but finally contacted  DWP (just DLA unit then) & asked for this to be reconsidered as it would never improve. He was then at age 16 given an indefinite, life term award, but along came nastier Tories, who admitted bringing PIP in, was to cut spending on it!  My son got the dreaded “apply for PIP, as your DLA will end” & he has his car on the Motability scheme, his lifeline for work & much more. He is experienced in helping others with this in his work, did the application himself during Covid shutdown, was done by phone with a Scottish nurse & he got 10 years with light touch review, which is the most you will get. I was really worried about it, as I know how it affects him & as he’s heading towards 40, it’s getting worse.

My wife was sent a review February 2022 as she was approaching her 66th birthday although her benefits were due to end January 2023 when we telephoned to ask how the review claim was progressing. They told us about delays in new claims and reviews and they will carry on paying you until it is reviewed. Checking are contact details as we had not been contacted since February 2022 they informed us they had the wrong area code   they said it had been inputted by them in error. And the review would now be from end of August 2022 about 4 months because of their fault.
This system needs addressing by the dwp   very quickly as disabled people are being denied their rightful benefits.

@Carolanne Rose I have been waiting for my review for 16months now, since june 21! They extend it 3 monthly but my council won't issue me with a new blue badge unless my pip is at least for a year at a time.

@Lancs lurcher I sent my review form back In February, my needs have changed, will the increase get backdated to when I sent the review form?
Extremely frustrating that they force us to reply by a set date or else we will not get PIP but they can't offer us a time scale as to when we will be seen for an assessment

@Lancs lurcher I received a review letter/form on Saturday it had been posted 10 days previous so I don't have much time to return it. Does this mean even though they have asked for this to be returned to them by 30/10/22 I will then receive a letter extending for a year? I find all of these actions so confusing and stressful as I'm sure everyone else does.

I am currently at 13 months waiting for a review.  Mine should go up because I was in a car accident and now been diagnosed with some more issues than I had before.  The benefits advisor got my local MP involved 3 months ago and still nothing has changed.  The local MP was really impressed he got an extension to my payments to end of September.  What a waste of time and this whole process is really frustrating.  I have now given up on chasing for my review, doubt it will ever be done now.  Tory Britain for you
