You could be waiting ten weeks longer for a PIP assessment, depending on which part of England and Wales you live in, figures released by the DWP reveal.

Earlier this week we highlighted a report that showed that 40% of health assessors drop-out during training and 52% of those that start work leave within the first year.

The huge turnover means that there is always a shortage of assessors.  This shortage is more acute in some areas than others.

The figures below, taken from DWP statistics for October 2025, show that new claimants in the South West of England wait an average of six weeks for an assessment to be completed and returned, after their case is referred to Serco.

On the other hand, new claimants in London wait an average of 16 weeks for the process to be completed, almost three times as long.

Only last month, we directed readers to a report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which warned that ““It is unacceptable how long some PIP claimants are having to wait for their claims to be processed, which can cause them to get into debt and push them into poverty.”

The PAC said that the DWP aimed to process 75% of claims within 75 days.  Yet in London, it takes an average of 112 days just for the assessment to be carried out, aside from the processes carried out by the DWP.

Below, we give the median number of weeks for October 2025 from referral to assessment provider to the return of the completed PIP assessment to the DWP.

The DWP divide PIP into regions for the purposes of statistics that do not absolutely match the areas covered by the different assessment companies.   As a result, the East of England is divided between three separate providers.

South West, Serco:  6 weeks

East Midlands, Capita:  7 weeks

Wales, Capita:  7 weeks

West Midlands, Capita: 7 weeks

North East, Maximus:  7 weeks

North West, Maximus: 7 weeks

Yorkshire and the Humber, Maximus: 7 weeks

South East, Ingeus:  11 weeks

London, Ingeus:  16 weeks

East of England, split between Ingeus, Serco, Capita:  13 weeks

In fact, the situation may now be even worse than these figures suggest, because the DWP have been diverting staff away from new claims in order to reduce the backlog of PIP reassessments, so the waiting times may well have increased.

In addition, from April 2026, the proportion of face-to-face assessments is to be increased to 30% for both PIP and the WCA, rising from lows of 6% for PIP in 2024 and 13% for the WCA.

Face-to-face assessments use up more staff time than  telephone assessments, so again run the risk of increasing waiting times.

UPDATE:  please note, the DWP do not provide statistics for Northern Ireland, where benefits are administered by the Department for Communities, or for Scotland where PIP has been replaced by ADP.

My PIP was stopped on the 2nd December 2025.  I had done a review as i had a new health condition.  I'd had help from Ipswich Citizens Advice (filled in form) very surprised it was stopped.
Waiting the results of Mandatory Reconsideration could take till April.

8 month wait for review to be completed from initial letter to a decision being made. This is still ongoing due to a worsening of circumstances in that elapsed time-North West area. Sadly, this extended delay causes an immense amount of worry and uncertainty about the future.

I waited 5 months for my PIP hearing but won it last month after DWP awarded me 0 points from previous 8 when I reported having had a mini stroke! I was awarded 16 points by the panel on mobility and daily living (diabetes and arthritis), so worth waiting for. I'm in Stroud, Gloucs.

I sent in my reassessment for PIP September last year and still have not heard back - it ‘runs out in August ‘26 -i’m in the East Midlands . DWP pressurise you to have your reapplication in within 2 weeks which is very stressful and then leave you ‘hanging’ at what is currently 5 months!

Hello All, I live in East Anglia. I submitted a claim for pip last May 2025. I had my phone assessment in December 2025. They then rang back and I had a second assessment. I was sent a text message on the 8th January 2026 that they'd awarded me PIP but the letter didn't arrive till the 20th January 2026. All in all 35 weeks! I've been awarded standard on both. But to be honest I think I qualify for enhanced on both but I'm too worn out to fight them. I think if I hadn't used the resources on this wonderful site I'd have been turned down altogether. So Thankyou Benefits and Work for All your help. Just a note the assessor did ask what help/resources I'd used?

I had an ongoing award which should have been reassessed 3 years ago but they kept extending it, finally got the form end of October 2025, took your advice and advised my circumstances had changed as apart from being 13 years older my osteoarthritis had worsened and personal care was now full time, I’d also had a bout of pneumonia which left me with late onset asthma. I also provided dates of all appointments. Also on your advice I posted the form back first class signed for, £10! but was worth it as 2 days later received a text from them plus photos saying it had been received. Still took till this month February when I received a text to say they had reached their decision and I would hear in 2 weeks, didn’t need that worry, pleased to say I have been awarded the same as before highest rate for both and also ongoing again.

I contacted PIP 7th July 25 to give them my change in circumstance.  Just had a new left knee . My review was January 26 so they said they would do full review in one go . All I have had since July is a couple of texts saying review still ongoing . Then got one saying it is still under review but have extended my claim until Jan 27 and will continue getting paid .

Disgusting having people wait and worry for so long 🤕

    Thanks Gary

I put my partners review in on 6th August 2025. Last month I contacted our MP because he is still waiting. In response the extended his expired reward to next February (2027) with the potential to extend again if not completed by then. 16 weeks is nothing compared to this

I sent in my PIP review last week with 47 pages of evidence an 12 pages of extra information that wouldn't fit in the boxes. To my utter shock, it's already been reviewed - in less than a week! I'm so relieved I don't have to go for an assessment. I've been re-awarded. I'm waiting for the letter to see exact points. I was hoping for enhanced mobility but might just leave it at standard as I don't want to rock the boat. I'm in the North-West.

It has been over two years since I filled in the wca review form. A telephone assesment was abandoned after the assessor was over an hour late ringing. Three months later and I am still waiting for another appointment.
I am also in the process of a MR request for Pip. It was a year from review form-assesment , the report and decision came back within a week and the MR submitted within 2 days. I heard this week that I will hear back by mid April.

@Mo64 I thought Scotland doesn't have PIP anymore? It's ACA now right?

@Graham When I lived in NI all of my husband's PIP documents were from the Department for Communities (DfC) which I assume is very separate from the DWP. We had to get everything moved across systems and there were different phone lines and everything so I imagine reporting is separate too. It's all kind of frustrating

I put my initial claim in in mid sept 2025 and I'm at Mandatory Reconsideration stage as of mid December 2025, still awaiting the decision on that stage but expect it to be knocked back as they tend to be so will go to the tribunal stage hoping I succeed there but the tribunal stage can be over 1 year plus away before they happen no doubt due to the sheer amount of cases they need to work through, so fingers crossed

My PIP claim was awarded for 3 years until 28 Sept 2026. Last Thursday I received a text from the DWP stating that the review of my PIP has started. I am still waiting for the review form to arrive. I can't tell you how thrilled and excited I am (not.)

Just wondering are wait times for re-assesments (once AR1 form filled and returned) similar or less than those stated in the article? London area in particular
