On 20th October 2011, Lord Sterling, co-founder of Motability made the following statement (link below) highlighting the role of the Motability Leasing Scheme and some key changes coming into effect.

The main changes are:

Limit the range of cars to only those with a maximum Advance Payment of £2,000 (except for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles).

Limit nominated Drivers to only those who live within 5 miles of the vehicle hirer.

Limit nominated drivers to 21 years of age (unless they live with the disabled person) and restrict young drivers under the age of 25 to cars in ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower which also have a power output of 115 BHP or less.

The changes are not retrospective, so cars on order or currently on lease on the scheme are not affected.
