If you are receiving ESA, then you will receive NI credits towards you State Pension. These credits also count (in part, but not in total) towards any future claim for a Contribution Based benefit, that you might need to make.
If you are receiving Income Related ESA then you do not receive NI credits.

Can you top up these credits yourself, or do you have to be employed for a certain period to build up these cerdits for future claims, ESA(CB).

Gordon,
My son gets Income related ESA and is in the support group, his award letter also states that he will be credited with NI contributions whilst claiming ESA.This letter is dated 11/11/11.
