ESA/Carers Allowance was created by Ultravox
Hi,
I'm on ESA and have just been told by DWP that I am entitled to Carers Allowance for my 90 year old mum (caring as in making sure she doesn't have falls and generally watching over her) Carers Allowance in a letter said they cannot pay Carers Allowance with ESA but I have an underlying entitlement and should be entitled to a "Carers Premium". Do i need to inform ESA of the Carers Allowance "award" or will Carers Premium be paid automatically. Thanks for any advice. Rob.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Yes you need to contact the ESA office dealing with your claim.
Your ESA will only be increased if you receiving Income Related ESA, so you need to check this as well
If you are in the WRAG then being a carer should excuse you from doing Work Related Activity, although it does help with WFIs.

Hi Gordon,
Been on to ESA and they have stated that as my ESA is mixture of Contributions based and Income related based that is the reason I am not entitled to Carers Allowance or Carers Premium but I have an "underlying" entitlement(whatever that means) Things are a little bit clearer but stil a little bit confused:dry:

The information you have been given is incorrect in the most important part!
Cares Allowance and ESA(CB) are classed as overlapping benefits so you won't be paid the C, however, if you are receiving ESA(IR), as you have been told that you are, then you will be paid the Carers Premium.

Hi Gordon,
I always thought that ESA was either IR or CB not both, just one or the other.
As I understand it on my ESA letter is 73.10 and Support group 36.55 and the there is a Disability Income gaurantee of 15.90 the 15.90 being the contributions based part? (125.55) although the 125.55 as a total is stated on the ESA letter as income related entitlement. Will get onto one Carers organisations to see what they think? Thanks for your input so far. Rob.

The £73.10 and the £36.55 will be ESA(CB) and the £15.90 is ESA(IR).
