My son is in the ESA support group and is going to be offered a contract in the next two weeks for a job that starts in September 2018. When do I inform the DWP that he is starting work? when he gets offered the job or in September when he actually starts work? I am worried they will stop his benefit and as September is such a long way away, whether he will start the job.

It is remunerative work that will effect his ESA however I would be tempted to contact them now even though it may result in question now.
You don't mention his earnings and hours would he meet the Permitted Work requirements, see the guide in the ESA section.
