PIP Home Assessment was created by Sheena Trott
My son suffers from Aspergers and has severe debilitating anxiety. He has not ventured further than 300 yards from the house in the last 3 years. He is suicidal, depressed and hates being around people. We had to request a home assessment due to his problems. The extra anxiety it caused him was awful to witness (strangers coming to his house). On the forms for PIP, I stressed that he does not leave the house, and does not like to be around people. He can't bear their smell or touching them ie handshake etc Can you imagine, after weeks of sleepless nights and preparing him for his assessment, not 1 but 2 assessors came to the house. Is that fair - they knew his situation. They said that one was being trained. Fair enough but why do this in my son's case. I was in a dilemma, protect my son and turn them away or try and talk him into allowing them into the house. Immense pressure on an already exlosive situation. If I turned them away, then we would have been seen as unco-operative and his benefits would probably have been stopped. Cut a long story short, they entered the house. My son was extremely agitated. He refused to shake their hands. The assessment started. The most perplexing thing of all, despite the problems above they focussed on his dyslexia. How is that relevant when he is suicidal? Then the guy did an examination of my son's movements. He touched him - he held his hands to test his strength? why did they not respect his feelings of not wanting to be touched. We both felt under enormous scrutiny and I will be really suprised if we get PIP without going to Tribunal. Hindsight, I should have refused entry to one of them and been stronger.
