ESA Contribution based -v- New Style was created by MyHipsHurt
I recently applied for 'New Style' ESA and have received a letter stating that I have been awarded 'contribution based' ESA. Despite reading up on the internet and on this site, I still cannot understand the difference between the two. I would be grateful if you could explain what the main differences are and does it matter that I've not been awarded 'New Style'.

Also, once I've had the medical assessment and hopefully been put in the support group, is the benefit backdated at all, as I understand it could be months before a decision is made.

Thank you.

Your options for a new claim are New Style ESA or Universal Credit.

Eligibility for NS ESA is based on your Contribution history whereas UC is based on your income and savings.

The letter is saying that you meet the criteria for an NS ESA claim, you will now be assessed to see whether you meet the criteria for an award. If you are placed in the Support Group then you will receive back payment of the SG component from the beginning of week 14 of your claim.

The next thing will be for you to receive an ESA50 to complete and return, please use our ESA Claim guides to help you complete the form.
