Benefits and Work guides was created by HarryD
Good Evening
Can I ask what this means in the Benefit and Work guide please
Did the HP ask whether you are able to use public transport?
The Guidance for HPs states:
“A person should only be considered able to follow an unfamiliar journey if they are capable of using public transport – the assessment of which should focus on ability rather than choice.”
If you are only able to use public transport with the assistance of another person, or only able to travel on very familiar routes, this should be noted.
It is in the guide, ways to challenge a pip medical report.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

This is in regard to the Going Out activity. This looks at three areas;
- your ability to plan a journey
- whether you can go out
- if you can go out whether you can follow a route to a destination
This is in regard to the latter task.
The DWP guidance says that a claimant needs to be able to use Public Transport in following a journey to a familiar or unfamiliar place, however, it is important to understand that this requirement is not included in the legally defined Descriptors that claimants are assessed against and we have regularly seen members refused points over this issue.
If you have problems with this then you should explain them in detail but remember this task is about your following a route and you will only score by explaining your problems with doing this.

Thank you Gordon. In my assessment the HP states I can not use a bus alone, but scores me 0 points in the going out activity

As I said we have seen the guidance ignored but as I said, being unable to use Public Transport on its own will not score you the points, it's your ability to follow a route that is being tested.
