PIP 'Managing Treatments' descriptor query was created by LocalPeopleToo
Hello, I am completing a PIP form, and just checking my understanding of the descriptors concerning Managing Treatments. Where, for example, descriptor 'f' says "Needs supervision, prompting or assistance to be able to manage therapy that takes more than 14 hours a week", should I understand this as 14 hours of supervision, prompting or assistance, or 14 hours of therapy? I had thought the latter, but re-reading, it seems their wording could mean the former. Many thanks.

Hi LocalPeopleToo

The 14 hrs refers to the numbers of hrs of therapy, but in order for the claimant to undertake that number of hours of therapy, they need 'supervision,' prompting or assistance. (which may or may not be an identical amount of time). However, the need for help is key, because the claimant scores for not being able to do it alone and the possibly detrimental affect that would have without it.

Just to clarify, if someone has home dialysis three times a week for six hours and requires ten minutes assistance at the start and end of the treatment to connect and unconnect them from the dialysis machine but no prompting, supervision or assistance during the rest of the treatment, then this would count as a total of one hour per week for the purposes of the Descriptors ((10 +10) x 3).

Hello BIS and Gordon - thank you both for taking time to reply. I'm afraid I'm confusing myself when I'm reading both replies...

From BIS I am understanding that if a person requires (prescribed) therapy that takes more than 14 hours, but they need prompting to start to undertake this each day (and without prompting would not start or complete the therapy), then they fulfill the descriptor.

But from Gordon I am reading that the 18 hours of therapy Gordon uses as an example, is NOT the amount of time referred to in the descriptor, and that only the 60 minutes of help they require to set up the therapy, is counted. Although without the set-up, none of the 18 hours of therapy could take place...

Apologies, I have been nose buried in PIP claim for two weeks, and my brain is a little addled - are you able to clarify?

Many thanks.

Hi LocalPeopleeToo

Sorry if we're confusing you, but you're overthinking this. It won't matter if you don't tick any of the boxes as long as you put in a description of what you require. Gordon gave an example where the supervision (which is key) was actually limited, despite the length of the treatment. It may, however be, that someone has supervision for a course of exercises and they have to have someone with them the entire time. I would like to say all assessors would judge it in an identical way, but we know they don't always, but take on board what Gordon says on this.
