Potential house move - ? Benefits was created by Carolasks
Hi,
I am hoping to purchase a small house for a relative who is currently renting privately and receives HB, ESA (IR) support group and PIP. They also receive SDP.

I understand that the purchase money must go from me to the solicitor. Ie, the person will not receive the money. The house would be purchased in their name. The reason for doing so is to try and provide some home security for my relative.

They will no longer require or receve HB.
2 queries....
A) Is there a time span when they must move from the rented house to the bought house to satisfy HB rules? Eg house in their name 1st Oct... do they immediately from that date cease to receive HB? Or is there an overlap time allowed to do repairs, move etc
B) If they decide to move in a few years and sell with the intention of buying elsewhere, will the sale money from the house be disregarded as the intention is to purchase another primary residence.

Thank you

If they do not move immediately then the property will be treated as an asset and will almost certainly stop payment of their HB and ESA(IR).

If they sell the house once they are living in it with the intention of purchasing a new home, then the money from the sale should be disregarded for 26 weeks in regard their ESA(IR) the period may be extended at the discretion of a DWP Decision Maker providing they can show that they are actively looking for a new property.
