Support Group ESA & self employed permitted work was created by pinksuedeshoes1
Hello

I receive ESA (support group) and DLA. I have wanted to do some work for a long time as I feel it would be good for my mental health. I have a fluctuating physical condition and it's taken a long time to find something that I feel I can manage. My latest motability car with it's adaptations are the key to that. I have been offered work based on a zero hours contract and so am going to do it as permitted work on a self-employed basis. I know I can work up to 15 hours a week. I will only be working for a maximum of 30 weeks a year. The job is relatively well paid ( £25 p/h). I've worked out that I could probably do 10 - 12 hours a week and after deductions I'd offset against tax through being self employed, the weekly earnings would average out to the £131.50 weekly limit stipulated by the DWP. Does this sound OK/feasible?

Also, after I've filled in the DWP's permitted work form, I know that if I'm in the support group I don't send it to my local job centre. Where do I actually send it?

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

I'm not sure that your maths is correct, I can't see how you can get from, keeping it simple, £250/week (10 x £25/hour) to under £131.50/week, even you were paying Income Tax at 20% that would only be £50 and that ignores your Personal Allowance.

Thanks for your reply. Am I in the wrong place - apologies if so?

I was thinking that because it's only 30 out 52 weeks a year, averaged out across the year it would be £7500 divided by 52 = £144.23 per week, which would be less after deductions allowed when self-employed, so under the £131.40 pw threshold.

Whilst the DWP can average earnings I have to say that I think it very unlikely that they will do so for a weekly wage so much greater than the allowance but the only way you will know is to ask them.
