Income support was created by Sharon
Hello this is my first post so please bare with me. I'm on SG ESA low rate and pip I've a carer who claims carers and also income support which is part of my claim which is about £55 every fortnight. Now he has had a bad health incidents since April 1st this year stroke, then heart problems and now type 2 diabetes, it's so heartbreaking for him. He is my live in carer as a non dependant who contributed what he can towards the home. Now he has been advised to claim pip and ESA benefits but someone has said he can't he can only claim universal credit, but this can't be right or can it. He is worried about this and about being a carer still for me, he is on all sorts of medication and finding it hard both mentally and financially as he only gets £66.38 a week carers and then £55 income support which is on my claim every two weeks he has appointment with brain clinic in a week or so about filling in benefit forms but he is frightened and stressed by what will happen and what he can claim if there is anyone who can advise or help with this complex matter it would be so so helpful thank you.

New claims for ESA stopped at the beginning of the year, so only Universal Credit is available for an Income Related claim, they can ask to be assessed for Limited Capability for Work, the criteria is the same as ESA.
If they have paid National Insurance Contributions in the past then their Carers Allowance should allow a claim for New Style ESA but they may have to push for this as the CA "rule" is not well understood by the DWP.
In principle, they can claim both but the NS ESA will be treated as income and deducted from their UC.
Are they still claiming the CA? They need to be cautious to still provide the minimum of 35 hours of care a week or they risk a recoverable overpayment!
