PIP and Carer's Allowance was created by janeyj
Hi, I lost my PIP at reassessment (after formerly being granted lower level daily care for 3 years, which I feel is the correct level for how my health condition affects me in all aspects of my life), and one of the reasons they gave for disallowing my PIP claim was that I am carer for my more severely disabled husband, who has physical and mental health issues, and claim carer's allowance. Therefore, according to their logic, I can't be disabled.
We muddle through, but our quality of life has pretty much gone down the toilet since I became ill. I was also his carer at the time I first became chronically ill and applied for PIP, and in fact, the huge stress of his care needs is a big part of what has made me ill.
Given that caring is known to result in a deterioration of the carer's own health, I figure there must be a fair few people in the same situation. I'm trying to get figures for the number of carers on carer's allowance who are also receiving PIP. Our local carers group wasn't able to help. We've made a FOI request to the DWP, but are hoping someone can help with the information sooner.
Does anyone here know? Thanks!

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Jane
I am sorry, but we do not have figures on that. You will have to wait to see the result of your FOI request.

I was hoping someone here might have the database skills to find that info here: stat-xplore.dwp.gov.uk/webapi/jsf/login.xhtml
Unfortunately I can't get my head around how to do the correct search.
I doubt very much that the DWP will reply to that FOI request in time for my tribunal, legally they should, but will they? Don't think so!

It won't give you the answer that you are looking for, to do that the database would need to include personal information as you would need to see whether person A has a PIP award and is also receiving CA.
The data available is just summary information so unless the DWP had already done the analysis and published it you won't be able to get any statistics from Stat Xplore.
The same may apply to your FOI and they may refuse the request on the basis of cost.

Could be that the DWP recently extended what can be done on the Data-Xplore site, as it now seems it's possible to dig up quite a lot of different data combinations. I'm sure there are combinations it can't come up with, but far more detailed stats than are generally given out can be located on the site. I think from the wording, it's for MP's assistants and social science researchers to use so they don't keep asking DWP for the numbers.
The guest log-in is somewhat limited, but turns out all that's needed to set up an account and get better access is a name and an email. I used my real ones, but my guess is that any name and any working email you can receive a validation link on would work.
Thankfully I was less brain fogged today and able to set up an account without too many problems. Well, apart from forgetting the password I'd used in the 30 seconds between entering it into the set up page, and first log-in! The database looks seriously intimidating initially, but by following the instructions in the help pages, I think I managed to dig up the info I wanted on benefits combinations.
If I set up what I asked the database correctly, the number of people in Great Britain receiving both CA and PIP at February 2019 (the latest available numbers in the system) was 27,673. May be handy for other carers refused PIP because "you couldn't provide 35 hours of care a week if you're disabled yourself" to know.
I just wanted to post this in case anyone needs to dig up specific stats regarding benefits numbers. Using the Data-Xplore site could be an option. You do need to be either well enough for an hour or two one day to get to grips with the database, or have a techy friend who will do the data mining for you. Though the help pages there are pretty good, this is not something to try on a brain fogged day.
