Relevant NI contribution years. was created by Probation789
Hi, my sister worked full time from age 16 to 59. However, in September 2017, she decided to leave work to travel for 12 months. She has this week been diagnosed with stage 2/3 womb cancer and will soon be starting treatment. She had intended to return to work but in a different job but, obviously, now she can’t. Is she entitled to claim any benefits. She has no mortgage and has always paid full insurance. She needs to know if her lack of contributions from September 2017 bars her from claiming. Thank you.

I'm afraid your sister will not be able to make a claim for a Contribution Based benefit as this will require Contributions in the two Tax Years 2016-17 and 2017-18 and she will not have a full year for the latter one.

Providing her circumstances allow it, she can make a claim for Universal Credit. If she has started her cancer treatment by then, then should have automatic qualification for the LCWRA group.
