Hi. I've just applied for esa but have been told I can't be paid contributions based as I've not paid enough NI. According to my record the first year they've used is still being calculated as I didn't work enough hours to pay much. Second year is covered as I'd upped my hours by then. I've been advised it should be covered as I still claim child benefit, but also that it won't be. So I'm confused. Can I claim their decision is wrong due to a final decision about the year not being made yet, and the fact I get child benefit, or is it just tough luck I was only working part time and didn't pay enough? I was also sent the work capability assessment form to fill in, so do I do this even if they won't pay me? Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm easily confused
You must have met National Insurance conditions for 2 tax years – in 2020 the tax years are 2017-18 and 2018-19.
You can check your National Insurance record on GOV.UK. It will say if you have a 'full year' of contributions, and if this comes from employment, self-employment or National Insurance credits.
