New Style ESA application started - any rough guide to waiting times at the mo?

Hi all,

I’m a self-employed calligrapher, currently waiting for surgery on my dominant hand, until that’s done next month and healed my working ability is greatly reduced. As I’ve paid my NI diligently over the last 10+ years I’ve applied for the contribution based New Style ESA. My GP has signed me off for 12 weeks, and I should be starting to return to capacity during August-September.

I’ve done the initial online form, and uploaded my fit note.

Maybe pertinent - I’m on PIP (standard living, enhanced mobility) as I also have impaired mobility and am on the Autistic Spectrum (which is why I do the work I do, from home, as my work-related access requirements are met that way)

I’ve had the text saying “we will contact you within 14 days.”

I'm based in London, if that affects where the claim gets processed.

Obviously I'm now bumbing around in an anxious flap as past experiences with the DWP haven't always been great, and I don't sit comfortably with uncertainty! Any guide to how long claims are taking to be processed would be helpful (is the 14 days actually realistic?!)

Hi cynical_optimist

I wish I could ease your worries - but realistically I can't. Sometimes they stick to the timescales they give, and sometimes they don't. The DWP are currently dealing with the migration process and many people are struggling to get replies within the promised 48 hrs. They have backlogs for PIP and many people have been waiting for their reviews longer than the promised 15 weeks. However, there are also plenty of people who do get replies in a timely fashion. So I hope that you do hear within 14 days - but if you don't you can give them a couple of extra days and then phone them to see what's happening.
