Council Tax and PIP was created by shaunw
Hi, I am a mental health support worker. I called Lambeth Council Tax to query an unexpected bill for my client - who is in receipt of ESA and PIP.

The staff member told me that from April 2025 legislation for council tax has changed. People on a low income will now only be entitled to 80% reduction in council tax. However, they will be exempt (and eligible for 100%) if they are in receipt of PIP. She said as my client's current PIP award expires on 6th October 2025, they have added that 20% liability to her bill.

Are mods or others aware of this change? It has taken me by surprise!

Hi Shaunw

No, I wasn't aware of the change. Council tax issues are outside the remit of the forum, but thank you for the information. I'm sure some of our members will start saying.

Each council is different.
I will have to pay 75% of my bill now (on UC).
I will still get single person discount, so it is actually 75% of 75% (I am also on PIP).
It’s annoying that TE does not cover this.
People should check their council websites as all are different…

Hi. My council also changed council tax reductions this year. We both get PIP my husband as an SR1 form added to his PIP due to cancer & we now get 95% reduction instead ofvthe full 100%. Ours is Sutton Council & were shocked when our bill came & we had to pay. There were letters sent last year about cut backs re council tax, but didnt think it applied to us, but it did. So I dont think its just Lambeth who are changing rules.

Hi All

Yes it is a common theme since the adverse publicity in the media regarding disability Benefits that Councils are altering their Council Tax schemes to the detriment of disabled claimants.
Though there is some good news if you live in the South Hams--
"What is our proposal?
We are proposing two changes to our existing scheme. We have a legal duty to consult residents and other interested parties and provide an opportunity for you tell us about your views on the proposed changes to our Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

We are consulting on the following changes to our scheme for 2024/25:

The removal of the Minimum Income Floor for self-employed claimants;

To disregard the ‘Limited Capability for Work’ element of Universal Credit."

We had a bill too. I’m sure I remember reading up on it ages ago somewhere online that many people would now be paying some CT. It’s not much for us though.
