Successful PIP Claim - Clarification was created by RE1864
Hello,
Firstly, thank you to those involved in creating your guides to filling in the pip form. I had an appointment with the Citizens Advice, contacted multiple charities for help and scoured the internet for advice - nothing was as helpful as this website.
I just received my assessors report and I received 11 points in daily living. I understand that this is a recommendation and I am awaiting the decision from the DWP.
I had a paper based assessment and at a quick glance, the report roughly matches my expectations, with one exception.
I have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and I argued that I require social support to mix with other people and as such, I would be eligible for 4 points in activity 9.
In fact, I was scored 2 points and I have received the following feedback:
'Activity 9 - Restrictions are clinically consistent with the nature of conditions. FE does not suggest risk of harm, cognitive impairment or lack of insight. Therefore it is likely she needs prompting to be able to engage with other people repeatedly and to an acceptable standard.'
I don't really understand what this means.
I am trying to determine if I have misunderstood the criteria and I have actually been scored correctly, or if I have not argued my case in the right way. Any thoughts appreciated.
Thank you.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi RE1864
The assessor agrees that you need social support to engage - and says that is in line with the nature of your condition (eg Austism Spectrum Disorder). The difference between 2 points and 4 points is who provides that support. If your support usually comes from friends and family, then you will score 2 points. If, however, you need the support of a trained professional, you will score 4 points. Now if you need both you will have needed to emphasise why the professional is needed over the friend or relative. Obviously, I don't know what you wrote on your form - but that will be the crux of it. The assessor has said that they do not believe from the information provided that you are at the risk of harm (when trying to communicate) have a cognitive impairment (that affects your ability to communicate) or that you lack insight (into your condition).
So to summarise - she acknowledges you need help, but has the impression, rightly or wrongly, that non-professionals supply this.

Thank you for your feedback, it's very helpful. I have decided to go ahead with a mandatory reconsideration.
Is it enough to say on the mandatory reconsideration that I do not have any friends or family to provide me with social support and to confirm the details of the professionals who support me?
Thanks again

Hi RE1864
I would start with something like "The assessor acknowledged that I need support when trying to communicate socially, but she was mistaken in thinking this is provided by friends and family...." - and then continue with the fact you have no friends and family and support is provided by professionals (and who they are) ..... And then say that you think you should have scored more highly for this question. Even give a couple of examples of when they provided support.

Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.
That's great, thank you. I will fill in the form and see how it goes.
Thanks again and have a nice weekend!
