Hello all,

I'm currently receiving pip for severe deafness and have applied for this 2 years ago.
My hearing has got really bad over the last 9 months and because also my tinnitus is severe as well it is unbearable sometimes.

I phoned DWP for advice and they sent me a mandatory review form, they also asked for a letter from my g.p to show my deafness is severe.
The g.p said they don't do letters for the DWP but gave me a copy of my ongoing file.

I filled out the form and wrote how this affects me more now each day, I spent 3 days filling out the extra sheets of information with very detailed answers on how it affects me and sent it back to them with what the g.p gave me .

Received a reply from the DWP, I was surprised that everything was the same, no increase in payments or any extra points awarded, I don't know what else I could have done?
I have now been waiting for my hospital to get seen for a hearing test for over 9 months so that I can see what is going on..

I have just tried the hearing care partnership with a test and requested a report from them.
I'm now trying boots for a full assessment.

What else can I do to prove my hearing is deteriorating?

Many thanks.

Hi Squirrel

I'm sorry you find yourself in this position. I'm not particularly surprised to hear that your points were not increased, as I've heard from many Deaf people who have had zero understanding from PIP assessors. Unless someone has tinnitus, they are unlikely to understand how truly depressing and debilitating it can be.

Did they explain why your award was the same? I can't tell you what else you might have said, because obviously, I don't know where you were trying to get extra points from what you already had. I know your hearing has deteriorated, but having proof of that would help your case. (Frustrating when you have to wait 9 months for a hearing tes!) However, even getting the proof will not automatically award you extra points - it's about how you convince them of the ongoing impact for the "majority" of the time, in respect of the specific PIP criteria.

Without giving away any personal details, can you give one example of a question where you expected to earn extra points and you didn't and a rough idea of what you said? Do you have any comorbidities, such as depression and anxiety, because of the tinnitus?

I don't know whether I can tell you the right things to say (except that I am deaf in both ears with deteriorating hearing) - but if will give it a try if you give me an idea on one question.
