I’ve had the migration letter for irESA to UC and I have a quick question. I used to receive Carer’s Allowance for my daughter, but this stopped when I reached pensionable age - 2021 - although I’m told I have an underlying benefit. My daughter has Down Syndrome, and currently receives irESA and enhanced PIP both for daily living and mobility. I am her sole carer, she lives at home. Just the two of us. The only income I have is a state pension and a very small private one.

Currently her irESA is made up of single living allowance, Disability Income Guarantee and extra money because she’s in the support group, which totals £161.75pw.

I’m just confused about the eligibility rules for SDA particularly the “you count as living alone” am I right in thinking that because I receive no benefits, my daughter is ineligible to claim?

Hi Sue9610

I am a bit confused with your post, especially the last paragraph.

I assume that the migration letter you have received is for your daughter, as your daughter is in the support group, when you apply for UC she should be placed in the LCWRA group. I believe that your daughter will be financially better off on UC.

As for yourself, you may be eligible to apply for Guarantee Pension Credit if your total weekly income (state pension + very small pension) is less than £273.50 per week, this is because you have an underlying entitlement for carers allowance, if you are eligible don'y forget to ask GPC to be backdated to when you turned SP age.

You may want to contact your local Welfare Rights Specialist; you can find your local Welfare Rights Organisation to help you with advice by clicking on the link below and putting in your post code, it will then come up with a MAP with a list of agencies in your area advicelocal.uk
