Confusion over IR or CB ESA was created by brena
I’ve received my managed migration letter but I’m really worried because I thought I was on IR-ESA only but now I’m not sure what is going to happen. I get a £10 Christmas bonus with my ESA in December which I’ve read means I’m on CB-ESA but the letter also says ‘Your total income-related amount’ is the full amount I get, which makes me think it’s all income-related.

I was on incapacity benefit years ago and remember my social worker at the time getting me to fill out a ‘incapacity in youth’ form. I get a letter each year from HMRC which says ‘Taxable benefit = £0’

Could anyone help me understand what type of ESA I’m on and what will happen when I start the UC claim?

Hi brena

Do you get a P60 sent annually by the DWP and what is the figure in the box " Taxable Pay and Benefits "? Also do you get PIP?

Hi David,
It says P60U.

Under ‘Pay and Taxable Benefit’ it says £7199.93. In the other boxes it says no tax is deducted.

Yes, I also get PIP.

Hi brena

The answer to your question is that you have been in receipt of Contributions Based ESA. You qualified for this via the Incapacity Benefit in Youth provisions. The figure on the P60U translates to an ESA payment of approximately £138 per week.
The £10 Xmas bonus is paid to both PIP and Conts ESA recipients.
Going forward you may have heard that the DWP is changing all Contributions Based ESA claims to New Style ESA but your payments will carry on as normal.
Universal Credit will top up your ESA. Hopefully your UC Managed Migration will go smoothly but let us know if there are any issues.
