PIP - been told I need 'full assessment' after call

Good afternoon,

I am my son's appointee. (I have posted about this before). He is in the process of transferring from DLA to PIP. Just before Christmas, I was contacted by the health assessment firm saying they wanted to book me in for a call. They said this wasn't a full assessment.

The call went ahead and it seemed to go quite well. In fact the assessor actually said she was going to recommend him for an award.

I hadn't heard from the DWP to say they had the report so I've just called them. They said they were waiting for the report which was a bit unusual, given that it was 3 weeks ago.

I then called the health assessment firm and was told that the assessor has recommend my son have a full assessment! I am really shocked as that wasn't what she said on the call at all.

I'm now really concerned. The firm said I would now have to 'wait' until I got a letter about an appointment.

Can I ask if you've come across this before? Can I insist that it's a phone assessment with myself? My son won't speak to them or engage in a face to face appointment.

Thank you for your time.

Hi ThomasT123

You are the second member to have a similar problem with the DWP wanting to speak to DLA to PIP claimants when they have an appointee. As his appointee, you are able to speak on his behalf, and if it were me, I would politely say that you will be speaking on his behalf. They often say there is a safeguarding issue, which is complete nonsense, and you have to be strong enough to stand up to them. The whole point of the appointee system is for the appointees to manage the claimant's benefit business for them, including assessments. You should have some paperwork on the role of the appointee, and I am sure there is something on there that you will be able to quote to them.

Good afternoon,

I thought I would update my query in case it's of use to any other members.

I had my son's full assessment for PIP. This was on the phone. I got a call on the Friday and was told there had been a cancellation so they could offer me an appointment the next day. I hadn't realised that they had Saturday appointments.

Again, the person booking the call told me that my son had to be there (potentially this is why they offered me a Saturday appointment as I had already told him he is still in school so wasn't able to make a weekday one).

I told them I was his appointee and that he would not engage with the assessment.
When the assessor called, she asked if my son could come on the call to confirm his date of birth and then he could leave. Helpfully, he doesn't actually know his date of birth so he just said 'I don't know' and then ran off!

I then completed the assessment on his behalf. The assessment was long: around an hour and 20 minutes. They asked questions about what GCSES he was taking and how he travelled to school. Luckily I had read your PIP handbook beforehand so I was as prepared as possible.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi ThomasT123

Thanks for giving us an update. I'm glad that it went well. (I'm afraid I smiled when your son didn't know his date of birth - no wonder the assessor didn't try to ask anything else). Don't forget to ring the DWP and ask for a copy of the assessment report - It's a PA4. You can ask for it 48 hours after the assessment has taken place. From this you should be able to ascertain what the likely outcome will be in the decision letter.
