Council tax ESA to UC Migration was created by Allison Allford
We migrated to UC July 23 2025. it was then we discovered we have to pay council tax. I explained we receive no more money but I was told you have to pay council tax if you receive universal credit. I asked if we could get a reduction on mental health grounds and was told 'it was for people with dementia that kind of thing'. I checked our local council tax reduction reasons and found more than just dementia.
The following can exempt you from paying council tax (in my area)
Severe mental impairment
Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease
had a stroke
severe learning difficulties
an impairment as a result of an injury
I was successful in getting a full exemption for my husband as he has borderline personality disorder. This meant I would get the single person discount.
I questioned why the government sees me as his carer but the council do not accept me as his carer because I am his wife. I was told that is how the council does it.
So to my question, having read the latest news is there or will there be a letter template to send to your local council along with the court case evidence which you have available?
