hi i recently informed uc of my council rent increase, uc pay the council directly. today my usual uc payment went into my bank account and its less than normal. The usual monthly amount is £1,028.07 and this month its £1,001.95. im really confused by this, i was transfered over from support group esa with transitional protection. any advice would be great.

Hi cw12
This is supposed to happen and was built into UC by the previous Tory governments so that most claimants moving from ESA to UC would in the long run be worse off.
In your case when you have a rent rise your total UC payment does not increase even though you have an eligible rent. What happens is your Transitional Element that is part of your UC payment is decreased. So while the landlord gets the new increased rent payment the actual rent rise is taken off your personal UC via a decreased Transitional Element.
Sorry for the bad news.

This has happened to my family member too. His UC payment decreased due to rent increase. Clearly I misunderstood transitional protection . I thought claimants weren't supposed to be worse off but would not see any income increases. The increase to standard allowance and LCWRA and NS ESA won't appear until the May statement. Does this mean they can exprct a further reduction in UC when all uplifts are applied?

Hi Bridget B
Unfortunately your fears will be realised as the annual uprating of UC is taken off the Transitional Element.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks. The rent reduction to the TP has alerted me to investigate why they did not remain on HB. They have a supported tenancy and live in accommodation exclusivly for people who have disabilities with a housing association . They have with a care package commissioned by the council. None of the tenants have HB anymore.

Hi Bridget B
Which Housing Association is it and have you raised the issue with them?
