Maximum PIP2 Extension Period? was created by grace
Hello, is it written anywhere that the DWP are legally required to give the maximum extension period for completing a PIP2, and what is that maximum period? A friend with the same illness asked for more time and they offered her 2 weeks, which she didn't query. My head is so ill currently with cognitive fatigue and difficulties that there's no way I will be able to complete my PIP2 with only another 2 weeks extension. I receive DLA, which was only supposed to end May next year, and I explained in my PIP1 how long it takes me to complete cognitive tasks and how I need to give cognitive priority to medical appts, paying bills, ordering groceries etc. I know that DWP staff are notorious for giving incorrect answers on the phone and answers that conflict with what other staff say, so I want to be armed with the facts when I phone for an extension. I cannot survive without DLA/PIP and yet I cannot force my brain to do what it cannot currently do (in such a short space of time), and there's definitely no point in submitting a rough incomplete PIP2 if I want to avoid the nightmare of an MR/appeal, so I am wondering what my options are? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Grace

The normal extension period is two weeks only. I know of some people who have been offered two weeks and then a further two weeks, but this is not common. If you are not well enough to fill it in, you would still be better to send in back half-filled in saying that you are ill than not sending it at all.

The initial two weeks can be granted by the call centre staff, but second and further extensions require the agreement of a Decision Maker and the problem is that this can easily take 10 working days to be decided so the request needs to go in as early as possible.

I have been sent a PIP form to be completed by 3rd October, I had planned to fill it in today 27th Sept - Today I get a letter saying they are going to give me an extra two weeks to fill the form in; and would like it by 17th October - Why would they send me this; as I have not asked for more time, or contacted them?

Some claimants are considered to at risk of being unable to complete the form in the four weeks normally given so if it has not been returned within a certain timescale then an additional two weeks is automatically allocated.

I am absolutely in the at risk group: I had made that very clear in my PIP1 form, ticking the relevant boxes for that section of not being able to complete it on time. I'd even included with my PIP1 a report from my specialist a few years ago of how my cognitive fatigue and difficulties affect my daily activities and deadlines. Plus it was very clear from my DLA evidence. And yet I haven't received an automatic extension letter!?

Do you know WHO receives, reads, scans and processes PIP1 forms? I'd assumed it was possibly a clerical team who then passed it onto a DM, but it's sounding like a DM didn't read mine. And it was any old person who possibly just skimmed my PIP1 and requested a PIP2 be posted to me. The PIP1 asks for a list of reports from DLA we want considered (if they still have them) - I listed the reports and test results in my PIP1 and yet there was no acknowledgement or answer re that in my PIP2 covering letter.
