From today Jobcentre Plus offices will begin referring tens of thousands of claimants to the Trussell Trust, a Christian charity, to be given food parcels instead of the cash they desperately need.

Referrals will be aimed primarily at those who have applied for crisis loans and those who are waiting for the benefits payments to begin. They will be eligible for a maximum of three food parcels a year containing items such as tinned soup, baked beans, meat, fish and pasta.

More details from the Independent newspaper.
