The DWP began extending hundreds of thousands of personal independence payment (PIP) awards last month. This is a matter of enormous consequence for claimants, yet the department has published almost no information about what is happening.

Benefits and Work has carried out extensive research to try to find out more about the changes that are being made, who they are likely to affect and how.

In this article we set out what we know for sure and what we think is likely but can’t be certain about.

In brief, we know:

  • The DWP now has the power to extend fixed-term PIP awards.
  • Under the new regulations they can only extend the length of awards, not shorten them or change the rates.
  • The changes only apply to claimants aged 25 or over living in England or Wales.
  • The changes are designed to deal with a lack of capacity to manage both PIP and work capability assessments (WCAs).
  • Letters are being sent out to claimants over a period of 4 to 6 weeks.
  • The decision to extend an award carries appeal rights.

We think it’s likely:

  • More than one million PIP claimants will have their awards extended.
  • Most of the extensions are being given to claimants whose awards were due to end in 2026, 2027 or early to mid-2028.
  • Extensions can vary from as little as five days up to six years.
  • It may be difficult to appeal an award decision because of the lack of clarity about how they are arrived at.

If you get an extension letter

If you do get a PIP extension letter:

  • keep a copy and check the end date carefully
  • remember it only changes the end date, it is not the same as a review of your award. It does not mean the DWP has looked again at your needs or decided whether your current award is still correct.
  • if your needs have increased, consider requesting a change of circumstances review (supersession) – consult our PIP guide or get advice if you are worried.
  • If you think the extension is too short you can challenge the decision, but it may not be straightforward because the DWP has not explained how extensions lengths are being calculated.

Members-only analysis below

In the rest of this article, we explain why we think the number affected could be over a million, whether your health condition or the level of your award are factors in deciding if you get an extension, what appeal rights may mean in practice and the reason the DWP expects to make savings by delaying reviews.

We also look at what is likely to happen when these extended awards are due for review in a few years’ time, including whether AI could play a greater role in processing evidence.

I got a 10 year award back in March 2019, the award letter said we will contact you “after” March 2029 so after reading this news item and people’s responses to it, I thought I’d check mine online on the One website, and the award letter on there says awarded in March 2019 with no end date but Indefinite listed, I was lead to believe PIP had no indefinite awards under its legislation and that 10 year awards with light touch review were the highest awards given, so when did indefinite awards for PIP start? this is worrying as I see the word indefinite in the context of DWP/Benefits awards as “we can assess you at anytime we like and out the blue” at least with a set end date I can start preparing for it and start getting evidence together even if the light touch review PIP form is a lot shorter.

Review light touch expected october. Now extended to April 2028 next year. I did inform of worsening conditions and extra health issues.  See what becomes of a 70 year old in twilight time.

My origional was 2027 but that was extended due to a neurological condition to 2030. Today they have sent a letter extending until 2032, I think its around 2 years from my expected review.

I got a letter today extending my PIP review by a few weeks. I had a (nearly) six year award - about 5 years 10.5 months. Review date was late Feb 2029 and now is early April 2029 taking the award to exactly 6 years.

Kind of what  I thought might happen given what other people’s experiences have been.

I was awarded standard rate PIP for both daily living and mobility on 7th March 2026, backdated to 1st October 2025.
My award ran until 24th February 2029.
I read the newsletter and didn’t bother to check online for an extension since my end date was in 2029.
I have today received a letter extending my award to 6th March 2030!

Just received an extension letter for my PIP (enhanced rate for both elements). I was due to run out in September 2027. They've extended my award by three years to September 2030.

Just got an extension letter today, I should feel happy, but I actually feel sad and angry. They have put me through the mill for 6 years, and conduct their horrific last assessment against the backdrop of my mother's sudden death.  Not an ounce of sympathy from them.
I honestly think people who have been geared up against the horrific DWP machine for a long time are going to get delayed-PTSD, I know I have got it now thanks to them.

I’ve just checked my pip online and though it was to end and be reviewed on 2 dec 2029 they have extended it to 2 dec 2031.  I get enhanced for both parts.  I had a change of circumstances done last year and got enhanced from standard in August 2025 for 4 years.  I didn’t expect this but it is a relief to get longer and more stability in payments.  Deb

Well thats a bit of good news from the dwp. Award extended until 29 July 2031. Probably means they gonna stop pip due to country being bankrupt and invent a new benefit thats harder to obtain...
