Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Been accused of ESA overpayment from June 2020, I put mandatory reconsideration in April 2021, I assumed they dropped it as I didn't hear anything after, until this month (sept 2022) with no explanation, no answer to the mandatory reconsideration. I have no option but to pay otherwise they would have gone to my employer to take 20% and I don't even know what i'm paying for, can't get through to them. I can't even make a complaint due to that being a phone call as well. Tried for hours multiple days this month. DWP debt centre says they can see they haven't resolved the mandatory reconsideration and it's probably just the system and I have done everything right but they cant do anything and I need to talk to ESA direct. Hopeless :(

I have been calling PIP to simply change my address, for the past 14 days. I call daily, at 9.30am, 2pm and 4pm. Each and every time, after approximately 20 minutes of waiting, they hang up.

If I am unable to make them aware of the change, I will be penalised. What am I to do? The change of address is of utmost importance as I am also awaiting a date for fave to face reaaesment.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do?

On hold for 55 mins to 0800 917 9149. Eventually phoned was answered, could hear the office and people talking in background. I said hello a number of times, no answer but could still hear office and people talking to each other and on the phones. No attempt made by person on other end to speak. Cut off with no warning. I am absolutely fuming. I need to change an appointment.  This is Thursday afternoon, the appointment is on Tuesday at noon. I have a job that is far too short notice to for my employer to get cover. Dont know how to rearrange appointment

I'm back in work and trying to cancel JSA. I've called each day during my break and have just listened to the recorded blurb for 1/2 hr each day. How can they expect you to sit and wait when you are back to work and working the same hours that their 'helpline' is open ? I have just written to my local Job Centre explaining the problem and asking them to cancel a future appointment. Hopefully something will get done before they mistakenly pay me another JSA payment. That, I'm guessing, will create all manner of new problems.

my benefit (JSA) did not come and should have been paid on Friday (6 days ago) I have called the 0800 169 0310 number over 6 times and have spent just under 5 hours in the Que and it cuts me off after 70 minutes. I have visited two job centers and each one took down my details and promised a call to me would be made. I never received any calls. I ran out of food yesterday.

Waited for PIP to report change of circs (which I am meant to do within a deadline) yet you call and can’t get through. Rang 7 times, go through multiple options and get cut off, 7th time calling on hold over an hour. Yet Tuesday - Friday after 10am is the best time???

Trying to get through to PIP to help a young lady with a change of address. Can't do anything online and the call gets disconnected, or you hear a garble of pre-recorded information that sounds like the person is in a submarine with poor signal. Strangely, the call is answered with a string of information about Ukrainian residency. Why do British people need to hear all this? Give them the option of pressing a number to listen to this spiel.  Honestly, I think the whole of the DWP is set up to cause as much hardship and misery to people as possible. It's absolutely disgusting that those who need money the most have to go through this appalling and archaic system. What is wrong with this country? Why does everything have be so hard?! If I wasn't incandescent with rage, I'd be laughing at the sheer madness of what should be a simple and efficient process. Anyone would think it's deliberate...

Been on phone to DWP for half an hour and no response other than everyone is busy, this is my 10th attempt to speak to them, I'm calling about a cost of living payment that i still never received and every attempt to resolve it is met with the response of going in circles or the phone cuts off when I select the option about cost of living. It has been about 7 weeks since I was granted the appeal and most people got there's over 10 weeks ago and by the time I can see citizens advice it'll be the 25th of October, makes you wonder if it's even worth the hassle anymore if the DWP is gonna lie their ass off or tell you to sink or swim🤬
