The DWP has confirmed in its latest personal independence payment (PIP) statistical release that many planned award reviews are on hold, but that claimants will continue to receive their current level of benefit until a review takes place.

In the DWP’s latest PIP Official Statistics to January 2022, published yesterday, the DWP admitted that planned reviews of PIP awards that were given for a fixed period are not all taking place because staff are working on “other parts of the process” instead.

“Planned award reviews are currently on hold in some cases which frees up resource to process registrations in other parts of the process but delays clearances for the award reviews themselves.”

In fact, the number of new claims is up 20% compared to November to January of last year.  So, a deluge of new claims is the “other part of the process” that staff are working on instead.  The bottleneck appears to be primarily in getting claimants assessed by Capita and Atos (IAS).

However, in the same document, the DWP do confirm that claimants who are waiting for their award to be reviewed will continue to receive PIP at the same rate.

“Any PIP claim where an award review is waiting to be processed continues to receive their pre-review level of benefit. Customers whose needs have changed and who are awaiting a review may instead register a change of circumstance.”

The confirmation that awards will continue in payment will come as a great relief to many thousands of claimants who have been left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty by a lack of news from the DWP about their award review.

PIP ward reviews backlog set to last

There are now over a third of a million (340,000) new claims ‘in progress’, meaning that they have yet to be completed and are probably mostly waiting for an assessment.

Waiting times for decisions on new claims have gone up from 19 weeks a year ago, to 22 weeks now.  Of this, most of the wait is for an assessment, up from 15 weeks a year ago to 17 weeks now.

Given the size of this backlog and the effect of the pandemic on people’s physical and mental health, which means new claim numbers are likely to remain very high, there seems little chance of Capita and Atos getting on top of things any time soon.

So, claimants awaiting a planned PIP review may be waiting a long time yet.

You can read the full PIP statistics to January 2022 here.

    Hi Everyone,
Thank you to all for your posts. I was very interested to see the impact on motobility car & blue badge. I am in a similar postion to all those who have sent in their renewal forms months ago and nothing received to date. I am actually calling PIP now for the third time (now at 32 minute mark)as the last time was 14th June 2022. I was told at the last call that ".....still in timescale for a response to be recieved." I am not sure which timescale this was reference to. Also informed that waiting for a manager to manually assess if I required an assessment for a face to face appointment. Well my form/information was logged onto system 6th April 2022.

I like many of the postees am running out of time untill my current PIP award date expires. I cannot order a motobility car as less than 12 months award remaining. I will contact my County Council to try to extend my blue badge as I have seen a post about this being succesful.

I have just got off the phone to PIP. I have now been told that my reveiw is listed and now being held on the system since 4th May 2022 and is awaiting to be sent to the "assessment" list. However as the "assessment" list is completely full they cannot send my reveiw yet and are awaiting space to go onto the "assessment" list. Could not give me any idea how long to get onto assessment list and how long once on assessment list that it would be dealt with.

So this is completely different to what I was told on 14th June 2022 regarding a response was awaiting a manager assessment for face to face assessment appointment. So I was waiting for 47mins 13s before I managed to speak to anyone, with this very dissapointing and confusing information.

The person I spoke to did apologise several times for not being able to help any further. So it appears there are two lists and that they are at full capacity for "assessment" list thus delaying PIP renewals already listed moving into the "asessment" list to obtain an outcome and thus a response to claiments. I am not sure if this really helps anyone to know this. As all I can summise is that not to expect to receive a response anytime in the next few months at least.

Once again thank you for all who have posted. It is very much appreciated, especially when you feel you are alone and anxious about what to do and how others are trying to cope with this stressful and upsetting situation. Thank you.

      @Glenn
Just spoke to my local authority and got a definite NO to this. No badge renewal until PIP award received. Badge expires in October. Rang DWP and I've still not been looked at for my review which was returned 19 December 2021, she informed me it could even be another 6to 10 months! Speechless

I was getting concerned So this morning I phoned up PIP at 9am. Surprisingly got through quickly, after spending 5 mins going through the automated system. I was told my form had been registered on computer and was waiting to be looked at but there was big backlogs and delays in processing reviews. Couldn't give me the slightest idea how long delays were or when my form would be looked at. Told me to phone back in Mid Sept 2022 if I still had heard nothing. Assured me I would still keep receiving my PIP payment until my review was processed even if my PIP award ended. My award was extended to Feb 2023 due to Covid.

Really is so stressful. I had to fight 2 tribunals to get PIP after moving over from DVLA because CAPITA assessor lied on my whole report. Took me over a year to be awarded PIP Been on it for 5 years now but still makes me feel ill when re assessment comes around.

Daughter turned 16 on August 2021, an error meant I had to submit forms by Feb 2022.  Just got award letter this week.  PIP will officially start 52 weeks after her 16th birthday.

I've missed a call from dwp today about my pip.  I put my review form in back Feb 2022 and heard nothing since, but my concern is I work 8 - 5pm in a building which has no mobile signal inside and I would not want them to ring me at work as its open plan office and don't want everyone hearing the call.  I did try calling on my lunch 30mins but just on hold.  I don't know what to do

I reported a change of circumstances and provided evidence of my condition getting worse and I have been told my payments will now stop. This is causing me even greater stress and anxiety as I wait for a manual reconsideration

@George Did you ask for a review? I want my claim reviewed as my illness has got worse I have cancer but I'm worried sick that they will stop my money until they look at my claim. If I was you I'd contact a benefits welfare advisor, contact the CAB they will direct you

My husband lost his blue badge while waiting since sept 21. He is about to lose his companion bus pass too.  His pip award letter is till July 22.  I am also losing my carers allowance on that date if a pip decision has not been received. This is added paperwork and pressure on me to deal with the additional applications I’ll need to make when a final award has been made. I could do without this as I’m looking after my husband.  Poor communication.

@Elaine the dwp is the lowest of the low..my review was with them on oct 8 2021....i have rang them every month from jan 2022 only to get same answer,,,it still has no decision,,,,,the dwp has a duty to either write or telephone us to keep us informed of whats going on instead of us guessing.i myself elaine have lost my blue badge,,disabled bus pass even though pip reckon the transport company will extend which is completely false,,what pip do not realise is that anybody on high rate mobility component needs a award letter to be able to get the extra benefits,,ie bus pass, mobility car,,,blue badge...motobility car needs minimum of 1 year award left....the dwp are taking that option away from a majority of people on high rate mobility component by not giving a decent extention in which we can get these incentives back

I lost £766.40 every 28 days, my PIP* and part of my ESA,  *has completely stopped they said they never got the paperwork back in time, the deadline was 3rd June, the problem was I never received it (from) about my review until after this date.  I rang them yesterday they said they got it on 13th June and it will take 6-8 weeks from that date to get information about my PIP I am very worried what is the truth about how long will it take, is from 6-8 weeks or 15-22 weeks, I am panicking, not only I losing this amount of money, I am also facing to live on the streets and apply to council who place myself and my sister who both disabled with serious health issue in band c, and all this problems is not helping with my mental health and making my epilepsy bad also

@Jabbashut Always post Special Delivery so you have PROOF they received it next day. Its £7 :( but worth it!! The DWP are using their very slow privatised mail handling service as an excuse to deny benefits. Currently letters posted to them can take between 10 days and 5 months.......what abysmal customer service.....

I sent my review in August 2021 and have a single text message back in May 2022 saying its being dealt with.  As a result, I have lost my blue badge as my local council won't accept the delay in the review.  A complete shambles.  Can't even complain to my MP as its Therese Coffey the MP in charge of the DWP.....

@Kiby I phoned my council and spoke to blue badge team and explained my review was still waiting being processed from last September. They looked at my previous application and asked what levels I was being paid and granted it again.

I have just been informed for the second time in 3 months that my Carers Allowance will stop on 27/6/22, currently on the phone to DWP PIP, as this is due to the fact that my husband has been waiting since July 21 for his renewal. I rang, back in March where they extended his award to 27/6/22 but that is almost here. They assured me it would of been renewed by now..
