The DWP has confirmed in its latest personal independence payment (PIP) statistical release that many planned award reviews are on hold, but that claimants will continue to receive their current level of benefit until a review takes place.

In the DWP’s latest PIP Official Statistics to January 2022, published yesterday, the DWP admitted that planned reviews of PIP awards that were given for a fixed period are not all taking place because staff are working on “other parts of the process” instead.

“Planned award reviews are currently on hold in some cases which frees up resource to process registrations in other parts of the process but delays clearances for the award reviews themselves.”

In fact, the number of new claims is up 20% compared to November to January of last year.  So, a deluge of new claims is the “other part of the process” that staff are working on instead.  The bottleneck appears to be primarily in getting claimants assessed by Capita and Atos (IAS).

However, in the same document, the DWP do confirm that claimants who are waiting for their award to be reviewed will continue to receive PIP at the same rate.

“Any PIP claim where an award review is waiting to be processed continues to receive their pre-review level of benefit. Customers whose needs have changed and who are awaiting a review may instead register a change of circumstance.”

The confirmation that awards will continue in payment will come as a great relief to many thousands of claimants who have been left in a state of anxiety and uncertainty by a lack of news from the DWP about their award review.

PIP ward reviews backlog set to last

There are now over a third of a million (340,000) new claims ‘in progress’, meaning that they have yet to be completed and are probably mostly waiting for an assessment.

Waiting times for decisions on new claims have gone up from 19 weeks a year ago, to 22 weeks now.  Of this, most of the wait is for an assessment, up from 15 weeks a year ago to 17 weeks now.

Given the size of this backlog and the effect of the pandemic on people’s physical and mental health, which means new claim numbers are likely to remain very high, there seems little chance of Capita and Atos getting on top of things any time soon.

So, claimants awaiting a planned PIP review may be waiting a long time yet.

You can read the full PIP statistics to January 2022 here.

I’ve been waiting over 3 weeks for a decision after receiving a text saying they have now got a copy of the report. Apparently the decision could take up to 8 weeks!

@Marc It's beyond words,I'm absolutely bouncing off the walls with worry. My pip review form went back v early March, not even a word back to say they got it, luckily I sent it "To be signed for" so got a screen shot of the signature. But have heard nothing at all,and it's mid June. It's diabolical. We are treated like goods on a conveyor belt.

I have been waiting since 25/6/2021 almost a year for a review of my pip award. Most recently it was agreed that a decision would be given by 23/05/22. After waiting a couple of days a relative called on my behalf to be told a decision has again been deferred until or before 23/08/22 and they were told that it wasn’t up to the pip department to tell me this and/or send me a letter explaining this. Surely this is wrong ? I am in desperate need for a new blue badge (pip were asked to send me proof that I’m entitled to a blue badge and I received a letter with a months award on til 23/05/22 … it takes longer than this for a blue badge to be processed and you need 12 months award to qualify)
    is this really acceptable…

Blue badge expiring is my problem too. I got advice from council then just called DWP. My PIP has been extended for a year so they are sending me out a new letter of entitlement which council will accept to issue another blue badge. Hope this info might help others.

It's going to be interesting for me ...... I've just submitted my PIP review (after having a letter saying it was extended t March 2023) which left me 2 weeks to complete it. I always need help but n organisation i.e. Citizens Advice etc. have advisors or face-to face appointments. I've tried my best with form, but .....
I will be in limbo land when my claim get transferred to Scottish Govt. in July 2022. What an almighty mess this is!!

I sent my PIP review form at the end of June and it arrived eith the DWP on the 2nd August, I had a text yesterday saying they still have my form and will review it as soon as they can...so I've been waiting 10 months so far...that's 10 months of anxiety. So I hope not everyone has this experience.

@Feefee I sent my review in January. I called DWP today to check they had received it. The lady said reviews are completely on hold at present and i will continue to receive full award meantime. Re. Blue badge, you don't only have to be in receipt of PIP to get it, but it helps. The Councils will be sympathetic to well publicised delays in reviews and renewals.

@Feefee I completed the paperwork for my review in early February 2022, I still haven’t heard anything! My blue badge has expired & without an award I cannot renew! It’s not only that, it’s the uncertainty, especially during the current cost of living crisis! My situation hasn’t changed for the better & as I have a physical deformity affecting my mobility, it never will, it will only worsen over time. I need to know what is happening, yes, I’m still receiving payments but worrying myself sick that the DWP may stop them! Phoning is impossible, either they don’t answer or cut you off, the system is broken!

Its ok saying our awards will continue until they get to our reviews ,but i need to show motobility a new reward so i can recieve a motobility car.as pip claimants are aware you need a minimum of a year left of your award to get a mobility car...i have roughly 10 weeks left of my award and its shocking how they can treat claimants this way

My pip award was renewed in May 2019 for 3years then extended until February 2023 due to covid lockdowns
I had my renewal form march 2022 which was completed and returned in due time where I'm hoping it's another paper decision
Does anyone know exactly how long this process takes?

My mother was appointed for my brother on PIP and ESA unfortunately she passed away in February now we have told DWP my brother will manage his own PIP benefit after they sent a letter asking who would be the new appointee for him but I do not want to do it, consequently they didn't pay him any money in February then he sent a letter with his bank details on for them to put his money into that account what did they do guess they put two payments one for February and one for March into my dead mother's account luckily it was still open but why put money into a dead persons account which my brother didn't have access to but luckily I do since then we have heard nothing tried to phone up but waited over 30mins pressing button after button before you got a ringing tone gave up in the end. People are right these advisors in the DWP don't care a f**k what stress they are causing people in fact I think they enjoy it and talk about in the pub. I know from my experience a few years ago when I had breast cancer I applied for Universal credit got one payment and then they said because I didn't apply in time they couldn't pay me any more money but I is t apply in time because I never got the letter from my employers to say my pay would stop till about a month later but they said this was t a good enough excuse and that the fact I had cancer wasn't an excuse to know what I was doing so you know what that's the kind of attitude they have after that I even appealed and got knocked back so I thought you what I have worked all my life I don't need you stinky money from you and hope you never have cancer and see what it's like cos money is the last thing you are thinking about. They even sent me a letter two and half months after mum had died the other week saying they had overpaid her pension by two weeks we'll tough because I won't be paying it  back because they owe her underpaid pension for the last two years which she and I sent a letter about but it's funny they have not replied to that doesn't work boths ways does it.

I've been waiting since July for my review to be told we are getting money not left without, that's all well but the new financial year is around the corner and people like myself ha e had changes to our health amd the council s aren't listening and taking off our benefits that help us pay our way. Is there at least extension letters coming out to help us that loose our benefits in a couple of weeks.. as far as mobility and the councils are concerned.

I put my review form in last April as I have changes to my physical health and needing more help my forms were put for a face2face review and forgotten about according to a telephone adviser . I have rung them numerous times but got no information until I got put through to someone in Ireland and they were very helpful . Also told delays worse in parts of country , I’m in Cornwall !

@Rach Hi,I was awarded pip by tribunal twice, first time (f2f) got it for three yrs, second time only two (paper based)this time I was sent review pip form, which if I'm correct they aren't meant to send if you were awarded via tribunals as they want you to do a fresh pip claim instead, like I dud second time. So awaiting my pip review result since early March and I'm destroyed with the anxiety and panic attacks.

@Rach As long as you've filled in pip review form, you should still get paid pip at the rate that you were until they review your claim.

When my award went under review they stopped my payments and I’m still waiting for a face to face appointment. I am truly struggling and not sure if I’m able to get them to pay me from the date they stopped it (last May) or if I should wait to see what happens when they eventually review. My health has deteriorated with post-covid symptoms and a potential dx of Systemic Scleroderma. Any help appreciated, thank you, Amanda

I have been waiting 40+ weeks for my review. I got enhanced on both in 2017 and my health has deteriorated dramatically since then to where I cannot walk without crutches and at a snails pace. It’s all well and good it being extended 3 months at a time and still getting pip but I have to pay for a blue badge every 3 months and then wait forever for a mobility car? It’s just horrendous

@SandiePants Glenn You do not need a pip letter for a blue badge ask the council for a blue badge based on your present medical condition and ask them to write to your doctor they give out blue badges on its own merits
