My understanding of UC is different from Gary's, whilst the initial payment takes five weeks, once you click on the final "OK" button, subject to there being no errors resulting from the information you have included, then you have made a claim for UC.
Having a UC journal should be proof of our son's claim, there is no "award" letter sent for UC.

Regarding Carers Allowance, it took only a week and a half from online application date to payment reaching bank account, but still no letter. Do you think the letter could come quite a bit later than the payment hitting the bank account?

Yes the letter can come quite a bit later, we have had posts on this forum when members have reported receiving their letters quite some time after they received a payment in their bank account.
On the bank statement it should show as DWP CA payment.
