The UC claim with carers element would all begin on the same day, as in the day following the day finishing being a student. Can this claim be done online without ID at the moment?

Yes, it should not be a problem.

So if a person claims UC with Carers Element, with their savings at point of claim below £16000, what happens if after say a few months their savings go above £16000 - does the person stay under UC but the UC payment consists literally of just the Carers Element? Or does the person have to finish UC and switch to Carers Allowance?

Just to confirm that this is for your son?

If he has savings and/or assets in excess of £16,000 then he will no longer be eligible for Universal Credit and would have to claim Carers Allowance to receive any payment for caring for you.

So if his savings were regularly fluctuating below and above £16000, he would regularly be having to swap between UC with Carers Element and Carers Allowance? That sounds like a pain!
Wondering whether it would be better to claim Carers Allowance first, and then maybe later claim UC without the Carers Element, so that the Carers Allowance gets deducted from the UC.. Then I guess the Carers Allowance at least would be permanent.
Can it work like that?

Yes, that would sound sensible.
